IECEx and ATEX Basics

IECEx and ATEX are commonly mentioned in hazardous area projects. They help users understand whether equipment and installation practices are suitable for environments where explosive gas, vapor, mist, or dust may be present.

IECEx

IECEx is often used as an international reference for equipment and service requirements in explosive atmospheres. When reading documents, check the equipment type, protection concept, gas or dust group, and temperature class.

ATEX

ATEX is often used for projects connected with European hazardous area requirements. Key points include equipment group, category, protection method, temperature class, and intended zone.

Hazardous Area Zones

Zone classification describes how often an explosive atmosphere may be present. Zone 1 and Zone 2 usually refer to gas environments. Zone 21 and Zone 22 usually refer to combustible dust environments. The zone affects equipment selection, installation method, and documentation checks.

  • Zone 1: explosive gas atmosphere may occur during normal operation.
  • Zone 2: explosive gas atmosphere is not likely in normal operation, or only for a short time.
  • Zone 21: combustible dust atmosphere may occur during normal operation.
  • Zone 22: combustible dust atmosphere is not likely in normal operation, or only for a short time.

Entry and Sealing Basics

Hazardous area installation involves enclosure protection, sealing method, thread compatibility, environmental conditions, and installation quality. These points are useful when reading standards, drawings, and inspection documents.

Ingress Protection

Check IP rating, sealing method, environmental exposure, temperature range, and installation condition.

Enclosures

Check layout, internal space, corrosion environment, temperature range, and certificate coverage.

Sealing Practice

Check installation position, sealing requirements, documentation, and inspection records before use.

Common Installation Notes

  • Confirm the project standard and local regulatory requirement before selecting any equipment.
  • Match the certificate scope with the product type and installation environment.
  • Confirm gas or dust group, temperature class, IP rating, material, and installation standard.
  • Keep installation documents, certificates, drawings, and inspection records for later review.

Learning Articles

The site focuses on short technical notes about hazardous area zones, IECEx and ATEX terminology, explosion protection markings, ingress protection, and installation documentation.
